Since I cant get my newsgroups downloaded in WM can anyone recommend a substitute?
-- Dilly itsdilly@comcast.net http://home.comcast.net/~itsdilly/ http://community.webshots.com/user/savalier People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.

Might try looking here for a news server that support the BoSox newsgroup: http://freenews.maxbaud.net/
Or you can always use Google. http://news.google.com/advanced_news_search?hl=en&ned=us
The problem with WM is that if the server hosts several thousand newsgroups (as most alt.servers do) you'll never download a complete listing, so my earlier thought was to just create an account with a news server and then use the link method to create a subscription to a particular group once you've determined the server "hosts" that newsgroup: news://name_of_news_server/name_of_newsgroup
FWIW, I use FreeNews for alt.groups. Server name is: news.readfreenews.net -- Jim Pickering

The issue with WM is a known bug. It is fixed internally and will be in release.

Jim Very weird stuff here. I bought a new hard drive so I reinstalled Vista. I see several differences but I will stick to mail and news for now. Before I could not add news groups or servers from a link or from the run command line now I can. I just added my Comcast server with my redsox ng and it went right in with the link you made. I also added that free server with the link you made. It works now but not before . If anyone is reading this with the same problem YELL I have a idea to try and fix it. LOL Humor me :)

Dilly: It gets "stranger and stranger." You are running Build 5384 of Vista right? The links should have worked in any version since the syntax has been around "forever." What idea are you brewing in that fertile imagination of yours?
Are you having any connectivity problems and is your Network Map showing the correct info? -- Jim

I am still putting stuff back so I am finding things one by one. Very weird and stupid things LOL I have new wallpaper I know its stupid but I have choices I did not have before. And believe me I looked! I had the classic Start menu set before. Now I am trying Vista style. Wondering if anything I changed such as the way we access start /run changes the way command lines are processed. Network is connecting to router internet and mail but not other pc's here at home yet.

WinKey+R will bring up the Start/Run box in case you've not been able to figure out how to "pin" it to the Start menu. Although it should not and does not AFAIK, change the way anything Runs. -- Jim

The
problem with WM is that if the server hosts several thousand newsgroups (as most alt.servers do) you'll never download a complete listing, so my earlier thought was to just create an account with a news server and then use the link method to create a subscription to a particular group once you've determined the server "hosts" that newsgroup: news://name_of_news_server/name_of_newsgroup
FWIW, I use FreeNews for alt.groups. Server name is: news.readfreenews.net -- Jim Pickering

You can just use the Start | Search box for the run commands as well.

WinKey+R will bring up the Start/Run box in case you've not been able to figure out how to "pin" it to the Start menu. Although it should not and does not AFAIK, change the way anything Runs. -- Jim

I also added that free server with the link you made. It works now but not before . If anyone is reading this with the same problem YELL I have a idea to try and fix it. LOL Humor me :)
