Unfortunately, only a few newsreaders do that automatically and correctly. It's mildly annoying, but not a huge problem. I wouldn't mind most newsreaders doing that, if most newsreaders also quoted previously quoted text with just the ">" rather than "> " which would pileup the line length pretty damn quick.
